Student Residence Hall Leaders Prepare for the Coming Year

Every year before the first students arrive, CUC's deans take their student residence hall leaders to the Canadian Rockies for a time of fellowship and preparation for the challenges of the coming year.  "One of Canadian University College's strengths is the personal care and attention each student receives," said Mark Haynal, president.  "The careful selection, training and preparation of our student residence hall leaders is key to providing that care in our dorms."

CUC's new administrative dean, David Ringer (left) and associate dean Brent Van Rensburg spoke to RAs and Student Deans about leadership.

Very few university residence halls have student leaders as handsome as this or are able to go on a retreat in a setting as beautiful as this!

Dr. Humberto Rasi Speaks to Faculty and Staff

Faculty and staff met together Monday and Tuesday morning for worship with Dr. Humberto Rasi.  Prior to retiring, Dr. Rasi was director of the Education Department of the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists.  His worship presentations were part of this year's Faculty Colloquium and titled, "The Transmission of Christian Faith and Values."

Planned and presented by the School of Business, this year's colloquium focus was on integrating faith and learning.  The program for this annual two-day event can be found here.

David Jeffrey, chair of the School of Business, welcomes faculty and staff to morning worship.  Professor Jeffrey
and his coworkers planned and presented this year's Faculty Colloquium.

Looking rested and refreshed after the summer break, Darrell Huether, Ron Schafer Dr. Wendolin Munroe and Julie
Grovet stood to sing the opening song Monday morning.

CUC Student Assists Dentist in Valley of Peace Project

In April CUC alumnus and local dentist Dr. Kelvin Hill and a coworker took current CUC pre-dental student Victor Halder on a dental mission trip to the Valley of Peace Seventh-day Adventist Academy in Belize.  "Although our team was smaller than usual this year we continued to focus on the dental health of the group of students attending Valley of Peace Academy," said Dr. Hill.  "This group of students is a manageable size that can be assessed and treated on an annual basis."

Victor Halder, a 3rd year Biology major
from North York, Ontario, made many
new friends on his mission trip to
Belize!
During the four days of treatment, April 22-25, the team performed specific exams on 37 students and community members.  They conducted 117 procedures: 13 fillings, 4 extractions, 30 preventative restorative resins, 51 sealants and 19 cases of dental scaling, polishing an/or fluoride treatment.  Dr. Hill reported he was pleased that this year the need for dental care did not, as it has in previous years, exceed the time and resources available to provide that care.  "We have made significant gain in controlling the tooth decay in this group of young people," said Dr. Hill.

Dr. Hill has been taking CUC students interested in a career in dentistry on annual mission trips for 11 years.

More information about this trip can be found here.

ARAMARK Chosen to Manage Food Services at CUC

ARAMARK Higher Education officially joined the Lacombe community on August 21, 2013 as the food service provider at Canadian University College. “ARAMARK has a reputation for providing top quality food service at other post secondary institutions and we are looking forward to that same service here at Canadian University College,” said Stacy Hunter, CUC Vice President for Student Services. “We are excited to begin serving the University community,” said Jeff Marcellus, ARAMARK. “Our goal is to enhance the dining environment and experience for students, faculty and staff, and to build partnerships across the campus community.”

A leading provider of dining, facilities and conference center management to colleges, universities, and preparatory schools, ARAMARK serves over 600 institutions across North America. ARAMARK provides residential dining and retail operations such as convenience stores, late-night eateries and branded restaurants.  In 2013 ARAMARK was chosen by Fortune magazine as one of the World’s Most Admired Companies, and by the National Business Group as a Best Employer for Healthy Lifestyles.  ARAMARK was the only global food and facility services provider to receive the World’s Most Ethical Companies honour for 2013 from The Ethisphere Institute.

ARAMARK has already begun working with different groups on campus to plan engaging events and get involved with campus initiatives. They have been in full force for the past few weeks preparing and setting up for a much-anticipated opening. The dining hall will offer breakfast, lunch, and dinner, which include cereal, hot entrĂ©es, deli, soup, salad bar, grab and go items, beverages, snacks and more. Students, faculty and staff can expect to see programs such as “Healthy for Life,” “Get the Good Stuff,” “Voice of the Customer,” as well as monthly promotions and events.

Canadian University College and ARAMARK are working closely together to bring the Lacombe community great tasting food and an awe-inspiring campus dining experience. Watch out for ARAMARK as they will be involved in many campus events in the coming weeks.
